Ballast Phoenix was the UK’s market-leading recycler of Incinerator Bottom Ash (IBA), converting waste from Energy-from-Waste plants into sustainable IBA aggregates and eliminating the need for landfill. The company played a key role in the circular economy by transforming waste materials into high-quality construction aggregates.
Our investment
We acquired Ballast Phoenix in 2014 from Ballast Nedam and supported management in expanding the company’s operational footprint and securing a series of new long-term contracts. Under our ownership, Ballast Phoenix grew the number of recycling and IBA processing plants from seven to twelve and executed a major investment programme that further strengthened its market and technology leadership. The company was acquired by Waterland Private Equity in 2015, following a successful transformation into a stand-alone, fast-growing and profitable sustainability platform.
